MARKET UPDATE 05.19.25
Good afternoon,
A cooler trend looks to settle in Salinas this week. Clear skies and cooler temps should result in some better quality in BROCCOLI, CAULIFLOWER, LETTUCE, and ROMAINE. It looks to remain a BUYERS market on California veg for the next few weeks!
We are in a bit of a dry spell when it comes to promotable fruit. May is a month where a lot of things are just getting started; CHERRIES, PEACHES, NECTARINES, NEW CROP GRAPES, WEST COAST MELONS, ORANGES, and much more, are either just starting up or transitioning. The good news is once we get to June, we will be seeing an abundance of beautiful summer fruit.
CITRUS markets remain strong this week. NAVEL ORANGES continue to wind down for the season and as we approach the switch to VALENCIA fruit. An overlap is still expected in the two varieties, which will keep us from any drastic changes, but markets will still tighten up due to the lighter availability. Current reports anticipate shippers will manage inventories for the next 4-6 weeks to maintain steady market pricing and availability through the fall.
LEMONS are transitioning up north to the Oxnard California area. Similar to oranges, we are seeing tight supplies as we transition. Sometime around early June, or possibly sooner, we should see things turn around.
LIME markets look to be softening, however the majority of availability is very small in size. We will see a drop in price on the 200ct fruit but pricing on 175 and larger sizes may be slower to come off.
GRAPES are beginning to transition! Next week we will have some new crop summer royal BLACK SEEDLESS GRAPES out of Mexico. This change marks the beginning of transition out West. We should see most varieties switch over from Chile to Mexico and California over the next 3-4 weeks. GREEN and RED seedless are still coming out of Chile, so we may see some typical late season condition while we await the new crop fruit. Please purchase with that in mind.
More as it happens,
